GM Foods-Benefits or Risks?

Abstract

Since the birth of GM foods, its acceptance has been expanding and it has really brought us lots of benefits. They enhance the crops yield effectively, make crops produce extra nutrition, and reduce the usage of insecticide and herbicide; bring farmers higher profits and bring consumers better choice. Though some studies have shown some side-effect of GM foods, none could prove they directly do harm to men. So far, we could continue to trust GM foods. At the same time, more research should be conducted to make sure of the safety.

As we are always eating the GM foods or processed foods with GM ingredient even without knowing that, I really wonder that if we could trust it.

Procedure:

  • First I referred to several books from NTU library and I got a general ideal about what I was to write.

  • Then I made out the organization of the paper.

  • Next I read the books and journals borrowed from the library and search the internet to find out the evidences that support my view.

  • Finally I carried out the first draft followed by second draft and final draft after talking with my tutor  .

Meanings of my findings

High-yield, drought-tolerant, extra-nutritional GM foods have become of great help and benefits, but extra proteins in GM foods, insecticide/herbicide-resistant GM foods and the marker genes also have become the concern of public. We should take this matter extremely seriously. Its risks are not as high as some radicals described but it's really uncertain yet.
